The Cold War During World War II Essay - 2497 Words

The Cold War was one of the most fear-inducing situations in American history. Post World War II, the superpowers of the world, namely the United States and the U.S.S.R, struggled to settle issues that arose from initiatives and responses after the war. These created the climate of tension and distrust between the two nations (Sibley 1). The United States held tightly to its liberal-capitalist beliefs while the Soviets â€Å"†¦professed fervent belief,† in their Marxist-Leninist ideology (Sibley 1). Many events led to the tension between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. First, the Soviets grew to distrust the Americans because, during World War II, the U.S. waited a long time to open a second front and relieve the Russians of the German attack. Then, during the Yalta Conference of 1945, it was agreed that Poland would be led by both democratic and communist powers until a democratic election could take place, but Communists took over soon after that and controlled Poland for the next four decades. This left the U.S. State Department feeling betrayed by the Soviets. The Soviets, in turn, felt betrayed by the United States after they were pushed out of Japan with the dropping of the Atomic Bomb. After that, a U.S. representative to the UN Atomic Energy Commission proposed that all atomic weapons materials be placed under international control and to destroy weapons that already existed (Sibley 7). Russia did not like this plan because it allowed the United States to hold onto its completeSho w MoreRelatedThe Cold War During World War II930 Words   |  4 PagesThe Cold War was political hostility between the United States of America and the Soviet Union through threats, propaganda and series of warfare incidents that made these superpowers of the time suspicious of one another. Persuasive on Overpopulation Essay Example For Students

Persuasive on Overpopulation Essay There are approximately 6 billion people on our planet now and by 2050 that number is expected to jump to 9 billion people. (http://www.prb.org/datafind/datafinder5.htm) Picture yourself driving down a crowded street or stuck in a traffic jam, have you ever wondered how it is possible for that many people to live all on the same planet. I have had those thoughts several times and believe that overpopulation is one of the biggest problems in the world today. Overpopulation has become a major crisis in the twenty-first century and its detrimental affect on our living standards, environment, and much needed resources. The problem is not the number of people in this world, but the way people choose to live. The dilemmas created by overpopulation affect people of all races and social status. This is why we as the human race must work together to preserve our planet and necessary resources before it is too late. The living standards embraced by todays population causes people to consume more resources, which in turn produces more waste and raises life expectancy. New industrial developments have provided a sense of stability and a lot more jobs for the people in their surrounding communities. Also, the increase in wages has allowed people to have larger families because they are able to support them financially. Statistics show that a child born in the U.S. today will produces 52 tons of waste and consume 11 million gallons of water by the age of 27. (World Overpopulation Awareness 2001) This is only one person; imagine what the numbers would look like for the entire population. Certain illnesses and diseases can be linked to the exposure the abundant amount of waste products and have a tendency to be more devastation and promenade in overpopulated areas. Fortunately, advances in the medical field, better doctors and new medications have all played a part in the decrease of these illnesses and have increased the life expectancy for people today versus 10, 20, and 30 years ago. The longer people live, the more influence their living standards have on the consumption of resources, disposal of wastes, and overall growing population. A more serious issue brought about by overpopulation also has an effect on the environment. The growth in the population has created a need for more energy to be produced. Energy is an important resource that is in constant demand, regardless of the pollution it disperses into our air and water. Air and water pollution can cause health problems and environmental issues which should not be overlooked, for the sake of our future and our childrens futures. The products used in this process release fumes into the air we breathe and are mostly invisible to the human eye. Air pollution rises into the atmosphere and combines with the moisture in the air and it causes acid rain. Acid rain then begins to contaminate our lakes and soil, as well as our drinking water, plants, and animals we consume. Some of the things we should do to lessen the amount of pollution immersed into our environment include, car-pooling, turning off lights when not in use, and even turning off the water while brushing your teeth. We definitely need energy to increase industrial developments, but we need to be smart about how we use it before it depletes every source of clean air and water available to us. A more commonly recognized issue created by overpopulation is the shortage of food, water, and shelter to accommodate all 6 billion people. Food and water are vital resources needed to just maintain existence. Having a place to live is a much-needed luxury that gives us protection from the environment and has even become a necessity in todays civilization. The increase in people means having to increase the amounts of food, water and shelter required to fulfill our human needs. The problem is there is only so much land left on this planet that we can use for food production and home building. Who decides what is more important? The amount of available land is decreasing just as fast as the need for these resources is increasing which creates a tremendous imbalance. .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc , .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .postImageUrl , .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc , .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:hover , .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:visited , .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:active { border:0!important; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:active , .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua005f0cbd686d9f447a28eed4e71f8fc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Leda and the Swan Poetic Analysis Essay What happens when we run out .

Why should you go to college free essay sample

When someone enters their senior year of High school, what could be the first thought that pops into their head? â€Å"Yes! This is my last year of school! I am free!† This is a very horrifying thought, this person plans on settling for a High school diploma which will probably lead to a life of unfulfilled dreams; how far do you expect to get with a High school diploma, especially during tough times like a recession. College is imperative for a long and successful life and can make your dreams come true in the long run. It seems so enticing to let a High school diploma suffice and avoid college but the easy road is sometimes the worst one. College happens to be notorious for being very challenging however; that doesn’t mean you should run from it. After four to six short years of studying, working, and sacrificing, the rest of your life will be a breeze. We will write a custom essay sample on Why should you go to college? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page You will be working in your dream career, instead of working at some dull, miserable, dead-end job. Do not let this current recession deceive you; someone with a college degree is prone to financial security. Out of a population of nearly seven billion people, there is a select few who are extremely talented to the point where that talent can provide luxurious life; fewer people hit the lottery, it is nearly impossible to match all six numbers and all of us have tried. It is clear, a long, stress free, successful life will have to be earned through college unless you either have an extraordinary talent or hit the lottery. Success does not come easy or cheap, college requires a lot of dedication, effort, and money (unless you receive a grant or a full scholarship, which is just as hard as hitting the lottery). However, over your life time, you will be paid back twenty times over for attending college, proving college pays off. In essence, college is vital to how far in life you can go. If you settle for a High school diploma or less, you will not go as far as you want to go; you will keep hopping from one dead-end job to another while the college graduate is at home relaxing in his huge h ouse, watching his sixty-four inch Plasma TV in High Definition. College will lead you to a life of fulfillment and realized dreams. No one ever regretted going to college, I wish I could say the same for the person who didn’t.

Book Review The Official SAT Study Guide, 2020 Edition

Book Review The Official SAT Study Guide, 2020 Edition SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The College Board recently published a new versionof The Official SAT Study Guide (2020 edition). What’s the book like? Is it helpful? In this review, I’ll break down the strengths and weaknesses of this newest edition of the official guide, discuss how students feel about it, and tell you whether it’s ultimately worth buying. Should You Buy theOfficial SAT Study Guide? While the Blue Book (as it was called by students)used to be the must-have source for SAT prep, The Official SAT Study Guide,2020 Edition, is mostly not worth purchasing. The book in its entirety - including its eight practice tests - is available for free online, so don't waste your money buying the book. Why did the College Board release this edition for free? It’s part of the College Board's attempts to make the SAT more accessible and to reduce SAT inequality based on socioeconomic background. This is a wonderful move by the College Board, but it now means buying the book is a complete waste of money. If you have the time, is it worth reading The Official SAT Study Guide, 2020 Edition, free online?Yes and no.The eight practice tests from the book (which are all available online for free)are absolutely crucial to your SAT prep. However, the book doesn’t provide you with details of how to score your practice test; you have to go online to do that, rendering the book useless. If you can’t even score your tests using the book, why buy it? Also, the educational material other than the practice tests doesn’t give much helpful test insight or strategy. The educational material just provides surface-level details about the test.It doesn’t teach you the content needed for the SAT.There are far better, more in-depth SAT study guides out there including the free ones that we’ve written: check out our Reading, Math, and Writing study guides. The educational material also mostly just tells you to go learn more on the Khan Academy SAT prep site, which is free for anyone to access, regardless of whether you purchased the book. Strengths The strengths of the books are very limited: Eight College Board practice tests are pre-printed for you, so you don't need to spend money printing them yourself (including two, Practice Tests 9 and 10, that are not yet available on collegeboard.org) You can recycle the book (AKAuse it for kindling in your bonfire or use it for a paper machà © project). Weaknesses Unfortunately, there are many: The entire book is available for free online (including two extra practice tests not included in the book!) The book doesn’t provide you with scoring information for your practice tests; you have to go online to get the information. The book only provides surface-level descriptions of each section and doesn’t offer instructional material, so you can’t actually learn skills and content from the book. There are no content lessons, so if you’re, say, struggling with geometry questions, you won’t get any assistance from this book; you’d need to seek additional help. Just taking SAT practice tests without a method of learning from your mistakes will not help you improve. The book sadly offers no guidance on how to learn from your mistakes or how to study content. How Students Feel About theOfficial SAT Study Guide 2020 If you don’t believe me, check out how other people feel about it.On Amazon, the book is currently rated 4.3 out of 5 stars, with 69% percent of raters giving it 4 or 5 stars (remember, it's still full of official practice problems!). That said, the 2016 edition of the book (which contained fewer practice tests and was also available for free online) has several hundred more reviewers. Of these reviewers, 82 percent gave it 4 or 5 stars, and 7 percent gave it 1 star: The 1-star reviewers of both editions of the official guide generally agreed with my feeling that the book was a waste of money, noting that everything in the book is available online for free. The 5-star reviewers, on the other hand, generally felt that although the material is available for free online, the book was worth the money since it’s a hassle to print out the practice tests. HowYou Should Use the Official SAT Guide I recommend that no students buy the book, but all students should be using the free practice tests available online. I don’t think any student needs to read the additional information included in this guide. The information is superficial yet difficult to parse: it discusses the types of question and content covered without giving many, if any, examples. We’ve created better free guides forReading, Math, and Writing. If you’re a worrywart (like me) and are stressed that you don’t know everything you can about the test, then go ahead and read the extra material for free online. You should be able to read all of it fairly quickly. As I said, it’s pretty sparse and superficial. However, reading this book alone will not prepare you for SAT success. You need to review your SAT practice tests to learn from your mistakes. You should also do in-depth content review of subjects you don’t know well or might've forgotten, such as systems of equations or semicolons. You still need to study! What SAT Prep Material Should You Use? Now that you know not to buy this book and to print the free practice tests from the College Board website, what other resources should you use to help you prep for the SAT? First, I recommend our free SAT study guides forReading, Math, and Writing. As I mentioned before, these guides are all available here on our blog at no cost to you. If you find yourself still struggling to improve after taking a few practice tests and using our free guides, consider using a highly rated SAT prep book, hiring a tutor, or enrolling in an online program. The effect of Dropping of the Atomic Bomb over Hiroshima and Nagasaki Essay

The effect of Dropping of the Atomic Bomb over Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Essay Example Bombing the two cities have altered the moral implications of the president who authorized the bombing, President Truman, from the will to continue in the war and since then has become the subject of intense and passionate debate even for generations to follow. Bombing the two cities caused intense harm and killed many people as well as destroying the environment and the offspring of the survivors. Many people have suffered deformities and mental disabilities as well as causing other forms of cancer ( Fleming and Yamazaki 5). This article describes the effects of the atomic bombings that were dropped in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively. It also contains all the authentic information, which is available on the damaged structures, the injuries contained in personnel, and the moral effect of the bombing. According to Kyoko (5) dropping, the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima at 8:15 A.M. on August 6, 1945, caused devastating damages to the cit y. More than 4 square miles of the city were instantaneously and completely destroyed. In addition, more than 66,000 people lost their lives in addition to causing injuries to more than 69,000 people. Later on August 9 the same year, exactly three days after the first bombing was carried out in Hiroshima, another bombing was carried out in Nagasaki at exactly 11:02 A.M. ... The resultant devastation led the country of Japan to be allowed to surrender under the terms of the Potsdam declaration of July 26 1945 that the country had previously ignored (Kyoko 5). Bombing both cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had similar effects. Fabricated structures as well as other inanimate structures were destroyed. The destruction of the above structures was because of blasts or pressures waves, which is mostly similar to that of normal waves. However, the waves caused by these bombings were intense due to the strategic location that they were dropped, a few meters before hitting the ground where by the pressures would be at their maximum. Moreover, this allowed the bombings to exact pressure on a large geographical area that in turn affected more people. Moreover, the destruction was because of primary fires, which started promptly due to the high temperature radiated from the atomic explosion. The high temperatures and fire caused many burns on the people of Hiroshima causing severe scalds that later caused loss of lives to the people of Hiroshima (Manhatt The Manhattan Engineer District 5). Bombing both Hiroshima and Nagasaki cities caused the collapse of buildings, damaging effect to electrical systems laid previously by the people of Japan, toppling of stoves, and other primary effects of the blast. Collapse of buildings caused many people to lose their lives, as the buildings would collapse on their dwellers killing them instantaneously. Moreover, people died because of the spread of fire from the bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The reaction of the atom when it was exposed to open oxygen caused an ignition that lighted the fire thus burning the burnings and the people in them. Many casualties in Nagasaki suffered severe
